What:
In the presence of fresh blood (to say nothing of a lack of nametags)
everyone in attendance said a few words of introduction.
There was a discussion of attribution and intellectual property in regards
to Lego creations. Conclusions were that wholesale copying should
generally credit the original designer, but that reasonable people
generally require only gracious acknowledgement of influences and
techniques when prompted. There are many unreasonable people.
Fred Meyer has marked down several sets, but those are moving rapidly.
TRU and other major retailers should be getting additional August releases
this month.
The brand store has lots of stuff on sale.
Window on the Community: This month will be Rick Clark (as soon as he and
Anu can find a quiet time at the store to effect the transition). August
will be Mark Neumann.
Ashley gave a report on Brickworld this past month in Illinois. Over 200
people preregistered. Of note were a large contingent of newbies---people
new not only to Lego conventions, but to fandom as a whole. The display
was strong in Town, Train, and Mecha, but with relatively little Space or
Castle. Seminars were limited. Much fun was had by most.
NWBrickCon is three months away (October 5, 6, and 7 with load-in October
4). Register soon if you haven't yet (http://www.nwbrickcon.org).
Proposals for presentations are now being accepted (see
http://news.lugnet.com/events/nwbrickcon/?n=362
). The all-Pirate Sail-In will be hosted at NWBrickCon 2007---look for an
announcement next week. NWBrickCon had a presence at the WaMu Family
Fourth at Gasworks Park
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=264581
and will have a similar presence at Bumbershoot (but more people will be
needed) September 1--3.
The Lego Store is doing a Batman building event on August 4 and 5, 10--6
and needs volunteers to assist the builders. Contact Neil if interested.
In part due to this event, the SEALUG meeting for August will be postponed
one week.
Various MOCs were on hand, including Terri's Cafe Corner standard city
block, Scott's live water fountain, and Rick's moving eagle.
Since only three people were able to locate the draft set in time for the
meeting, the draft of set 7092 has been postponed to the August meeting.
